The Yukon Grant and Student Training Allowance: What Northern Residents Can Claim

Two different programs, not one

Yukon runs two separate funding streams for post-secondary students: the Yukon Grant and the Student Training Allowance. You cannot receive both at the same time , so pick whichever program fits your school and your program length.

The Yukon Grant

For the 2026-27 academic year, the Yukon Grant pays $195 for every week of full-time study, released as a lump sum each term rather than weekly. Lifetime support through the grant caps at 170 weeks, and that cap is shared with the Student Training Allowance if you use both programs across different points in your studies.

To qualify you need to be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person, enrolled full-time at a designated institution, and meet one of three youth-residency paths: you completed 2 years of secondary school in Yukon, you are 20 or younger and have lived in Yukon continuously since age 14, or you lived in Yukon between ages 14 and 18. On top of that, you must have lived in Yukon for the 2 years right before your classes start . Expect to prove this with tax filings, valid Yukon health insurance, a Yukon driver's licence or a General Identification Card.

Studying outside the territory adds an extra $1,500 a year in travel allowance, but you need to return to Yukon within 12 months to stay eligible for the following year's grant. Applications open once your classes start and stay open for 6 weeks after, processed first-come first-served, and you reapply every academic year, which runs August 1 to July 31.

The Student Training Allowance

The Student Training Allowance targets shorter, approved training programs of at least 3 weeks at specific Yukon-based training institutions. It pays weekly and scales with how many dependants you support.

DependantsWeekly rate, 2026-27
None$138
1$201
2$234
3$259
4 or more$290

Students who live outside Whitehorse and keep a second residence for their training receive an extra $110 a week. The allowance runs up to 40 weeks a year, inside the same 170-week lifetime cap shared with the Yukon Grant. You need the same 2 years of Yukon residency immediately before classes start, Canadian citizenship, permanent residency or protected person status, and you cannot already qualify for funding from another province or territory.

Which program fits you

If you are heading to a degree or diploma program at a college or university outside Yukon, the Yukon Grant plus its travel allowance covers more ground over a full academic year. If you are enrolled in a short, specific training program inside the territory, especially with dependants to support, the Student Training Allowance's weekly rates by household size pay more per week than the flat Yukon Grant rate. Either way, apply as soon as your program starts, since both programs pay from the week you begin rather than from your application date, and both run out at 170 weeks over your lifetime.

Keep your residency proof current

Since both programs hinge on 2 years of Yukon residency right before your classes start, keep your tax filings, health insurance and driver's licence current at your Yukon address well ahead of applying. Gathering this proof after the fact, once you already live somewhere else for school, is harder than keeping it organized while you are still in the territory.
