UCAS Clearing Explained for Canadian Students Who Miss Their Offer

By Muntasir Minhaz • Published Jun 04, 2024 • Canadians Studying Abroad

TL;DR

Clearing lets you find a UK university place if you miss your offer or change your mind after results. It runs from early July into October, and you contact universities directly instead of waiting to be contacted.

  • 📩 Clearing opens in early July and stays open into October.

  • ⏱️ UK A-level results land on results day in mid-August, but your Canadian Grade 12 marks or IB results may land on a different date.

  • 🎓 Call the admissions line for each course yourself. Do not submit a form and wait.

  • 🏠 Have your Clearing number, final results and course choices ready before you call.

UCAS Clearing Explained for Canadian Students Who Miss Their Offer

Who ends up in Clearing

Clearing exists for applicants without a confirmed place once results are final: your grades missed a conditional offer, you applied later in the cycle with no offer at all, or you decide you want a different course or university after seeing your results. It is not a penalty system. UK universities fill genuine spare capacity through it every year, including at well ranked institutions and popular subjects.

How Clearing works, step by step

  1. Confirm your Clearing status: UCAS marks your Track page once your firm and insurance offers are both unsuccessful, or if you applied without holding any offer.

  2. Search the Clearing vacancy listings UCAS publishes for open courses and check entry requirements against your actual results.

  3. Call the university admissions line directly for each course you want, since Clearing runs on direct contact rather than a fifth UCAS choice.

  4. If a university offers you a verbal place, add that choice yourself through Track to make it official.

  5. Confirm your final place once you accept, and Track updates to show your confirmed university.

Why the calendar runs differently for a Canadian applicant

UK results day, when A-level grades post nationwide, falls in mid-August. Clearing activity spikes hardest in the days right after that date, since that is when most UK-based applicants first learn whether they hold a confirmed place.

Your own results likely follow a different calendar. International Baccalaureate results for the May exam session post in early July, weeks before UK results day. Final Canadian provincial Grade 12 marks are usually locked in through June and July, well ahead of the UK's mid-August date. This means you may already know your final academic outcome before Clearing activity peaks, giving you time to decide whether you need it at all before the rush starts.

If your UK offer was conditional on an IB or AP outcome, check your Track status as soon as your results are official, rather than waiting for UK results day out of habit. A conditional offer can turn into a confirmed or unsuccessful status the moment your board sends your results to UCAS, regardless of what date UK schools get theirs.

What to do if you land in Clearing

Prepare a short pitch before you call: your final grades, why you want that specific course, and one or two direct questions about the program. Admissions staff take dozens of calls in a short window, so a clear, direct call moves faster than a long explanation.

Have a backup list of two or three alternative courses or universities ready before you start calling, in case your first choice fills before you reach them. Keep your Clearing number, shown on your Track page, on hand, since staff ask for it to pull up your file.

Adjustment no longer exists

UCAS discontinued Adjustment, the separate process that once let students who exceeded their offer conditions look for a different course while holding their original place, in 2022. If you outperform your conditional offer, your original place still stands. You no longer have a formal UCAS process to shop for an upgrade without giving up your confirmed spot, so weigh that trade-off carefully before you decline a place you already hold.

After you accept a Clearing place

Apply for accommodation immediately once your place is confirmed. Main-cycle students often claim on-campus housing before Clearing offers go out, so contact the university's accommodation office alongside your course confirmation rather than after it. Also confirm your visa and study permit timeline: a late confirmed place compresses the weeks you have to secure your UK entry documents before term starts.
