Overview

The Bachelor of Science with a Major in Neuroscience at the University of Alberta, offered jointly by the Faculty of Science and the Neuroscience and Mental Health Institute, addresses brain development, nerve cells and synapses, sensation and perception, learning and memory, control of movement, animal behaviour, cognitive psychology, and disorders of the nervous system. Described on the program page as interdisciplinary, the major allows students to add an optional minor or double major chosen from more than 60 subjects, and an Honors version of the BSc is also offered. It suits students interested in the biological basis of behaviour and cognition who want either a broad neuroscience foundation or the flexibility to combine it with a second field. Career paths named on the program page include biochemist, diagnostic imaging specialist, forensic laboratory analyst, forensic psychologist, geneticist, laboratory technician, mental health clinician, neurobiologist, neurophysiologist, pharmaceutical researcher, pharmacologist, and research scientist. The program is delivered on the university's Edmonton campus.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 70.00 / %
Admission Requirements: Direct entry from Alberta high school. Required: English Language Arts 30-1 and Mathematics 30-1, plus two of Chemistry 30, Physics 30, Computing Science ADV (CTS-5Cr), Mathematics 31, or Biology 30, plus one further course from Fine Arts, Humanities, Languages other than English, or Math/Sciences. Admission to the Faculty of Science is competitive: the Faculty requires a minimum application average of 70% across the required Grade 12 admission subjects, and its three-year admission-average trend is low 80s to mid 90s — meeting the minimum does not guarantee a seat. Some university courses carry additional Grade 12 prerequisites beyond the admission requirements. English language proficiency is required of all applicants regardless of citizenship.

Application Details

Application Deadline: Domestic applicants apply directly to the University of Alberta, not through a provincial service: for Fall 2027 entry the application window opens 1 October 2026 and the deadline for most programmes is 1 March 2027, though several limited-enrolment programmes close earlier (Juris Doctor, 1 December 2026; Dental Hygiene, 1 November 2026) or later (Bachelor of Design and BFA programmes, 1 May 2027); Spring and Summer 2027 admission also opens 1 October 2026, while Winter intake is limited to a few programmes. International applicants use the identical published dates and online application; the university states no separate international closing date. The 1 March deadline is firm and late applications are not accepted, but admission decisions are then issued on a rolling basis, and offers made before 1 April must be accepted by 1 May 2027. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
