Overview
The Doctor of Philosophy in Medical Sciences (Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging) is a thesis-based, on-campus doctoral program offered by the Department of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta. Research areas include medical imaging, radiological and health physics, and radiation biology and biophysics. The department has no fixed list of approved courses; students select graduate-level coursework in consultation with their supervisor and supervisory committee, subject to approval from the Director of Graduate Studies. Students satisfy the Faculty's Program Core Competencies through ethics and professional development training, participation in Radiology seminars, supervisors' journal clubs, group meetings and the annual Radiology Research Day, and coursework addressing critical reading/thinking and background knowledge. Candidates complete a PhD thesis proposal, pass a doctoral candidacy examination, then register in 900-level thesis credit to prepare and defend a dissertation approved by their supervisor and supervisory committee. Financial support is typically available through Graduate Research Assistant Fellowships and competitive scholarships from national research agencies.

Admission Requirements: Admission follows the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry's Graduate Program Entrance Requirements, which apply the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies' minimum GPA policy plus FoMD-specific standards. English language proficiency must be demonstrated via TOEFL iBT (minimum 95 overall, 21 per skill, for tests before January 21, 2026; minimum 5 overall, 4.5 per skill, on the new scale from that date), Academic IELTS (minimum 7.0 overall, 6.5 per band), or Cambridge English (minimum 185 overall, 179 per sub-score); completion of EAP 550 also satisfies the requirement. Applicants must submit three letters of reference (at least two academic), a statement of research interests, a curriculum vitae, transcripts, and a Supervisor Confirmation and Applicant Funding Information form completed by the prospective supervisor.
