The single-cycle master's in Medicina e chirurgia (class LM-41) admits students to a filter semester of six-credit courses in chemistry and propaedeutic biochemistry, physics and biology, taught on a uniform national basis. Attendance in those disciplines is compulsory, and students may enrol in the filter semester up to three times. Students who pass the filter-semester examinations and reach a place in the national merit ranking progress to the second semester, and are placed at a university according to their stated preference or available places. The award is a single-cycle master's-level laurea, level 10.

Filter-semester exams are national, each with 31 questions: 15 multiple-choice and 16 completion.
