PhD in History

This doctoral programme in History at the University of Macau trains research-minded scholars for future academic careers. Study lasts four years, and teaching is in English with some courses in Chinese. The training centres on Chinese history, the exchange between China and the West, and the history of Macao. Students are expected to master the theories, methods and current questions of historical study, think critically, and write and communicate to academic standards. They also follow university-wide and faculty courses on writing, research ethics and teaching, receive individual supervision, and get help preparing their work for publication. For students admitted from the 2020/2021 academic year, graduation requires coursework worth 9 credits, a doctoral thesis worth 18 credits and a successful oral defence.
