This four-year doctoral programme at the University of Macau prepares students for scholarly careers in the fields of philosophy and religion, and it is taught in English. Candidates write a dissertation and carry out research projects, with topics ranging from comparative and Chinese philosophy to the philosophy of language, mind and religion, as well as critical theory and political philosophy.
The student body and faculty come from many backgrounds, and doctoral students are invited to spend a portion of their studies at partner institutions abroad. Every academic year the programme organises lectures, conferences and workshops with international speakers, and some students have secured funding through scholarships or assistantships within the university.
By the end of the degree, students are expected to produce original research built on a clearly stated thesis. That may be an interpretation of a thinker in Western or Chinese philosophy or in religious studies, an answer to a contemporary problem, or a fresh approach to a topic in the field, supported by flexible problem solving and critical analysis.
