Overview
This master's course in teaching and learning, with Maltese as its single main area, is the standard first qualification for people entering the teaching profession at secondary level. After a first-cycle degree has supplied the subject content, students concentrate on pedagogical content knowledge, knowledge of the educational context, and educational research and inquiry. All three connect to the school field placement, and the wider educational setting is covered through educational themes and positive, creative learning environments. The course links theory with practice to form a collegial, inquiring and reflective educator, and it supports democratic values and social justice in teaching.
It runs full-time for four semesters at MQF Level 7 and carries 120 ECTS credits, with a mainly taught structure that also includes research.
All applicants need a first-cycle degree at Category II level or Second Class Honours, plus a Police Good Conduct Certificate, and must not be on the register set up under the Protection of Minors legislation. For Maltese, the first-cycle degree must carry 70 ECTS credits or more in a relevant field, though the University Admissions Board may accept comparable qualifications if the Faculty Admissions Committee recommends it. Applicants lacking essential knowledge may be asked to complete supplementary study-units pitched at Level 4 or below, worth no more than 12 ECTS credits.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: UM applies course-specific entry requirements under its regulations and bye-laws. Local applicants are assessed on qualifications such as the Matriculation Certificate, International Baccalaureate, or European Baccalaureate; international applicants hold overseas qualifications evaluated individually for comparability with UM's standards, with no extra requirements beyond the course's own criteria. MATSEC-qualification applicants must apply as soon as they receive their first result slip after the May/June session; students sitting September resits should apply by the course's first deadline rather than waiting on resit results. After evaluation, the Office of the Registrar issues a decision letter. Admission may also be granted via Recognition and Accreditation of Prior Learning (RPL) for undergraduate and taught postgraduate courses.
