Overview
The interdisciplinary programme gives in-depth knowledge of the life and work of Henrik Ibsen and his influence on the formation of modern drama and theatre practice worldwide, covering themes in his plays such as gender equality, individual freedom and the questioning of authority. It runs for two years, either in person or through a largely asynchronous online track, and is based at the Centre for Ibsen Studies, which maintains databases on Ibsen's works and their adaptations across performing-arts genres and offers a virtual-reality reconstruction of the theatre where Ibsen served his theatrical apprenticeship. Teaching combines small class discussions, one-on-one and collective thesis supervision, reading groups, and seminars with visiting researchers. Students can instead write a shorter thesis and use the third semester for an internship working with digital resources at the Centre or at another institution, and study or internships abroad are encouraged through the Centre's academic and theatre networks. Graduates are described as moving into research and teaching, cultural administration, event organisation, or the performing arts.
