MA/MS in Informatics: language technology

The programme examines how machines can interpret human language and how people in turn communicate through it, drawing together linguistics, artificial intelligence and computer-science skills within the field known as human language technology. Teaching covers the technology behind services such as machine translation, voice assistants and question-answering systems, methods for automatically analysing language data, how the communicative system of language can be formalised for computational processing, and how statistical models let computers handle and model human communication. The degree combines coursework with a thesis, with supervision from an internationally mixed group of scientists; some courses are compulsory while others are chosen freely in consultation with a supervisor, and the thesis is usually completed at the Department of Informatics but can instead be done at another research institution or with a local company. Teaching is in English.
