PhD in History

The Doctoral Studies school at Doha Institute for Graduate Studies offers a PhD in History focused on Arab and Islamic history, read through modern historiographic theory rather than narrative alone. The program examines how intellectual, political, social, and economic structures shaped historical events across the Arab world, while still engaging the history of specific incidents and reinterpreting it against newer methodological frameworks. Per the published program page, this track is not accepting applicants for the Fall 2027 intake. Doctoral candidates are expected to work across diverse Arab and international archives, which the program ties to training in the languages needed to use them. The stated aim is producing researchers able to place Arab history within broader Mediterranean, African, and global frames, applying both structural and event-based historical approaches rather than treating either as sufficient on its own.
