Master of Science (Mathematics for Educators)

The Master of Science in Mathematics for Educators is a National Institute of Education programme designed around the professional needs of mathematics teachers. It stresses broad and deep content knowledge in mathematics and connects that knowledge to classroom teaching. Students take courses across several branches of mathematics from practising mathematicians, many of whom also hold teaching qualifications in the subject. Level 1 courses cover selected topics alongside methods for teaching them, and Level 2 courses allow students to build further expertise in areas they choose. A core course, Mathematics Inquiry, lets them study current research in modern mathematics. Stronger mastery of mathematics supports better teaching and encourages higher-order thinking among pupils. The programme also benefits specialists in education institutes who design curricula, assess learning and develop teaching resources.
