The doctoral programme in Archaeology at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Primorska (UP FHŠ) retains the full range of established archaeological and historical knowledge while bringing classical archaeology and history together in a contemporary, inventive fashion. In time it covers prehistory, the ancient Mediterranean civilisations, antiquity, the Middle Ages and, finally, the archaeology of recent times.
Method and theory receive special emphasis: every individually designed curriculum includes at least one methodological task. Students can work with a range of present-day archaeological concepts, from the archaeology of cultural circles and processual archaeology to post-processual ways of analysing and interpreting human activity, and political and economic history remain part of the picture.
Students may select content from other postgraduate programmes, because the credit-point system allows close links with foreign faculties. The programme leads to the title Doctor of Sciences (PhD). The page presents it as attractive to foreign students and as a way of extending Slovenian education towards the north-west Balkans and into the EU.
