Computer Science at Barnard is an undergraduate major offered by the Barnard department together with the Computer Science department at Columbia. The department wants students to understand computation and data analysis well enough to use them in other fields, and to think carefully about how technology affects society. The curriculum is meant to support new teaching approaches, interdisciplinary applications, and a more diverse community in computing. Open houses and program planning meetings help prospective majors choose courses before registration begins. Graduates commonly enter technical positions in industry or government, or continue to graduate school. Many pair the major with a second interest such as business administration or medicine. A 4+1 pathway with Columbia also lets Barnard students begin graduate work while still undergraduates, with advisors from both institutions helping plan an accelerated master's degree.
