This program combines rigorous technique training with intellectual study of dance as an art form, cultural practice, and social expression. Students develop physical skills through regular studio classes in various dance forms including contemporary dance, ballet, and other traditions. The curriculum includes study of dance history, choreography, aesthetics, and the role of dance across cultures and historical periods. Students create original choreographic work, perform in diverse contexts, and collaborate with other artists. The program emphasizes dialogue between technique and artistic vision, physicality and intellectual understanding. Coursework addresses how dance both reflects cultural values and shapes societies, serves ritual functions, provides social commentary, and builds community. The major includes study of contemporary dance companies and diverse dance traditions. Graduates pursue careers as performers, choreographers, dance educators, and cultural workers in dance companies and community-based organizations.
