The major introduces students to astronomy through the physical processes found across the universe, from planetary atmospheres and planets around other stars to galaxies, supermassive black holes and the history of the cosmos. Coursework blends astronomy with physics and mathematics.
Students learn to present astronomical ideas clearly to different audiences in writing and speech, and to reason critically about problems in astronomy and general science. The degree is positioned as preparation for science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers, with emphasis on technical skills and practice in solving problems.
The major takes fifteen courses, each finished at C or better, and most are worth four units. As with all undergraduate majors at the university, students also work through the BU Hub general education program and the College of Arts & Sciences requirements.
