BA/BS in Computer Science

Computer science at Carleton is a major open to students with no earlier programming background. The department's faculty and students tend to work where computing meets other disciplines, so projects range from biology and the humanities to robotics and art. Study covers algorithmic thinking, artificial intelligence, software design, databases, graphics, security, networking, operating systems and computational theory, among other areas. Newcomers are directed to the introductory course CS 111, which runs every term and serves as the gateway to the rest of the department's courses. The department describes itself as welcoming to people of every interest and experience level, from complete beginners to those who have competed in school robotics, and it presents the field as broader than writing code alone.
