Housed in the Ashley School, this major examines how living standards and economic, social and political conditions in communities worldwide can be improved. It builds practical skills for analysing problems, designing solutions and leading change.
All students begin with an interdisciplinary core, then add engaged-learning experiences and thematic electives of their own choosing. Current Cornell students who wish to switch into the major must meet a GPA threshold and finish three fall-semester courses first.
Graduation depends on meeting the requirements of the major together with the broader degree requirements of the admitting college. Students work with advisors to plan their courses, and the catalog sets out the policies on grades, declaring the major and academic standing that apply along the way. Prospective applicants should review the expectations of the admitting college before choosing this path.
