The plant sciences major teaches how plants function from the molecular level up to whole ecosystems. Graduates are prepared to make discoveries, breed stress-tolerant crops, develop sustainable cropping practices and green urban spaces.
Instructors belong to the integrative plant science school, home to horticulture, plant biology, plant breeding, plant pathology and soil and crop sciences. Students use orchards, vineyards, turf facilities, botanic gardens and research farms, and are expected to attend class activities in person.
Graduation depends on meeting the requirements of the major together with the broader degree requirements of the admitting college. Students work with advisors to plan their courses, and the catalog sets out the policies on grades, declaring the major and academic standing that apply along the way. Prospective applicants should review the expectations of the admitting college before choosing this path.
