The music field grants graduate degrees in music (PhD), composition (DMA) and performance practice (DMA). Performance, composition, theory, ethnomusicology and historical musicology reinforce one another.
The curriculum is flexible, and students shape their study with a committee of three to four professors. Musicology students must be able to read at least two foreign languages and know the language of their research area. Only students aiming at a doctorate are admitted. The degree requires at least six semesters in Ithaca.
The PhD is administered by Graduate School at Cornell University and follows the academic standards set for that unit, so students should expect to meet both program and university expectations. Current course lists, degree requirements and academic policies are published in the university catalog, and applicants with questions about eligibility or the application process should contact the department or graduate field directly.
