The graduate physics program prepares students for advanced careers in research, teaching and applications through a strong base in theoretical and experimental physics. Research areas include accelerator physics, supported by on-campus facilities such as the electron storage ring.
All students complete four core courses covering advanced experimental physics, electrodynamics, statistical physics and quantum mechanics, and then add specialty courses with their committee. A qualifying exam must be taken early, followed by an admission-to-candidacy exam in the third year and a dissertation defense. Passing the candidacy exam also earns a master's degree.
The PhD is administered by Graduate School at Cornell University and follows the academic standards set for that unit, so students should expect to meet both program and university expectations. Current course lists, degree requirements and academic policies are published in the university catalog, and applicants with questions about eligibility or the application process should contact the department or graduate field directly.
