Emory's doctoral program in anthropology covers three subdisciplines: archaeology, biological anthropology and cultural anthropology. The department encourages conversation and combination among people, interests and ideas, and welcomes a wide range of dissertation research across cultural and biological topics.
Courses are rigorous and are balanced with a tutorial approach to advanced subjects. Students may specialize within the cultural or biological branch, or build projects that link the two, and they are exposed to competing explanatory frameworks instead of a single theoretical line.
Faculty train students for tenure-track positions as well as for careers outside the academy. Students can draw on research labs, a grant writing program, the writing center, an alumni network and professional development opportunities offered through the Laney Graduate School.
