The Geographic Information Systems certificate teaches the tools behind a technology that shapes decisions in conservation, real estate and city planning.
Students learn the workings of GIS, covering hardware, software and the management of and sharing spatial data online. Hands-on projects cover mapping, GPS, remote sensing and collecting data on mobile devices.
They also look at federal map standards, the systems used to survey land, and how boundaries of land are defined. The certificate is available on campus or online. Admission requires that students be in good academic standing at Ferris. Courses include fundamentals of GIS and a second GIS course, each carrying three credit hours. The certificate belongs to the College of Engineering Technology. Students learn to apply GIS in real settings through case studies, and the short length makes it easy to add to another program of study.
