This Deaf Support Specialist degree, built around American Sign Language, is a two-year applied science program at the SouthWest College for the Deaf for students who want to enter employment right after graduating. It is open to deaf, hard-of-hearing and hearing students.
Graduates may work as educational advocates, job coaches or mediators, or speak up for Deaf and Deaf-Blind adults. Employers include government agencies, organizations serving the Deaf community, and school settings serving Deaf students.
Placement in sign language courses depends on a proficiency test, and transfer credit for those courses is not automatic. Graduates may be subject to background checks at potential workplaces, so students are encouraged to research the expectations of their preferred employers. Students should contact the program about placement testing before enrolling.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Students must be enrolled in or have finished ENGL 0315 or a college-level English course before taking DSS courses. A sign language proficiency test determines course placement.
