Howard's Graduate School offers a Chemistry doctorate for people who want to become faculty or lead researchers. Alumni have taken industrial and federal agency jobs, and others serve as teachers and postdoctoral researchers at colleges and universities.
Applicants arrive from many backgrounds: engineering, biomedical science, chemistry, math and atmospheric science among them. The program teaches the design of research and the use of laboratory instruments, plus practical skill in the lab and in computer-based methods. A student can specialize in analytical, atmospheric, biological, inorganic, organic, medicinal, computational or physical chemistry, or in materials, polymers and nanochemistry.
Funding for research comes from the National Science Foundation, the cancer institute and the Department of Defense. Applicants for spring 2027 must apply by Nov. 15, and applicants for fall 2027 face early (Nov. 15), priority (Feb. 15) and final (Apr. 15) deadlines. Study is full-time on campus.
