The Master of Science in Chemical Engineering is offered by Howard's Graduate School for students drawn to biochemical, environmental and materials processes. It readies graduates for research, government and industrial work in fields such as biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing and renewable energy, and it also leads on to doctoral study.
The curriculum builds a base in thermodynamics, mass and energy balances and kinetics, then trains students in theory, computation and experiment, such as fluid flow, process simulation, gene analysis and making biomolecules. Strengths include design for sustainable energy, nanotechnology, biomolecular and environmental engineering, heat and mass transport, process control and applied math.
Faculty mentors work on subjects ranging from cleaning up hazardous waste to biopolymers and bioengineering, and their projects draw funding from federal agencies and industry. The degree requires 32 credit hours of full-time study on campus.
