BA/BS in Area Studies

This undergraduate major combines language training with area studies of East Asia. Every major studies an East Asian language, and students then choose content courses on the region. Majors also learn the methods of one academic discipline through a focus area. Options are history, political science, sociology, the history of art and film, the history of science and technology, or an individualized focus approved by the program director. The language requirement is six courses in Chinese, Japanese or Korean, using at most two languages, followed by an independent project, independent study or senior thesis. Half the major courses must be taken at the university, none may be pass/fail, and each needs a C- or better. Foreign study is encouraged.
