Social and Cultural Analysis is an interdisciplinary department that combines humanities topics with social science methods. It hosts five program areas, including Africana, American, Asian/Pacific/American, gender and sexuality, and Latino studies, and majors build an individualized concentration from them.
The department studies how human collectivities relate to institutions and structures of power amid urbanization, transnational exchange and diasporic movement. The major calls for nine courses worth 4 credits each, totaling 36 credits, each passed with a C or higher. Majors with strong GPAs are encouraged to take a senior honors seminar.
Prospective undergraduates can consult the university bulletin page for the full list of required courses, the credit structure of the major and the criteria for honors study. Advisers in the department help students plan their sequence of courses alongside the wider requirements of their school, and many students combine the major with other fields of interest.
