AA/AS in English Language and Literature, General

This transfer-focused Associate of Arts in English or literature helps students read complex texts more critically and write with greater precision. Courses introduce a broad range of authors, genres, traditions, and literary criticism. Students explore other voices, cultures, and historical periods, and they learn how literature reflects the society that produced it. They practice analysis, synthesis of information, and clear prose. The four-semester plan combines English composition, history, government, and core requirements with electives in the major. Because many careers need study beyond the associate level, advisors help students choose courses that fit the university they intend to attend. Career options named for graduates include grant writing. Course selection is best planned with an advisor, since transfer requirements differ between receiving universities and students benefit from matching their electives to the program they intend to join.
