The graduate program in biological sciences provides research training in a multidisciplinary setting. Study areas range from cells and molecules to organisms and ecosystems, including neuroscience, microbiology, development, evolution and physiology. Doctoral students typically combine lecture courses, laboratory research credits, small seminar courses and dissertation work. On joining, each student meets an adviser who helps plan the first year, and once a research adviser is chosen a faculty committee guides the rest of the course of study. Courses at other nearby graduate institutions are open to students as well. Alumni build careers in academia, industry and government. The page says a master's degree exists but that the department is not currently recruiting candidates for it, and doctoral students enroll in a department colloquium every term in residence.
