Overview

Students seeking to become professional ASL interpreters follow four immersive semesters in this applied science degree. The goal is fluent two-way communication between American Sign Language and English in many settings. Coursework includes advanced vocabulary and grammar, the facial expressions that carry meaning, and interpreting methods such as sight translation, consecutive and simultaneous work. Study of deaf culture and community values accompanies ethical standards for practice. A local advisory committee supports faculty. Teacher Education and Human Services faculty oversees the plan, which takes two years of full-time study. The program page lists 61-63 required credit hours. Small classes give students steady, direct access to instructors, who offer individual guidance and feedback as learners work toward their goals. Advisors help map each semester so the plan fits the intended career or transfer destination.
