Cert in American Sign Language

This certificate develops competent American Sign Language communicators in two semesters. Graduates can serve as a link between deaf and hard-of-hearing people and services in healthcare, education and other areas. The first term builds a base in signs, grammar, fingerspelling and numbers. Composition and critical thinking courses support general communication growth, and immersive classroom practice reinforces fluency. Learning also includes awareness of deaf culture and community. The Humanities department offers the credential, which can serve as a standalone qualification or as a first step toward further interpreting preparation.
