The biology major studies living organisms through laboratory, classroom, and field work. The curriculum offers a broad foundation in biology and room to specialize in an area of personal interest. Students learn the scientific method by doing it, testing their own hypotheses and designing their own experiments. Close reading of primary scientific literature is part of the training as well.
Coursework spans evolution, ecology, genetics, cell biology, bioinformatics, physiology, animal behavior, and conservation biology, with emphasis on the process of scientific inquiry. Many graduates move toward advanced study or the health professions, while others enter government, business, law, environmental consulting, or biotechnology. Field and study-abroad experiences, including conservation work in Hawaii and tropical ecology programs in Costa Rica, add practical depth.
