Program details

Overview

The master's program in applied mathematics at Rensselaer's Department of Mathematical Sciences treats mathematics as a working tool for problems arising in science, engineering and management. Students learn to build, analyze and evaluate models of real situations, and they study the branches of mathematics most useful for solving them. Coursework combines graduate-level offerings inside the department with at least one course taken outside it, chosen together with a math adviser. Every student also completes a capstone professional experience, which can take the form of a project, a practicum such as a graduate co-op or industry workshop, or a pair of advanced courses. Graduates are prepared either to continue toward a doctorate in applied mathematics or to take positions in business, industry or government. Students follow a plan of study approved by the department and the Office of Graduate Education.
