Overview

Biotechnology means modifying living systems to make a helpful product or process. This offering is taken together with a conventional major and adds a compact sequence in science, policy and ethics. The sequence covers molecular genetics and biotechnology, each with a lab, plus an introductory bioinformatics class, a course on how technology intersects with policy and business, and a bioethics class. One additional elective is chosen from a short list. Applicants may compete for a four-year STEP Scholarship, and students can take part in a peer-led learning program. In total the requirement comes to 21 credits. It complements majors in the sciences and related areas. Saint Vincent College is a Catholic, Benedictine liberal arts institution located in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, and it offers this program to its students.
