The Computer Science major at Simmons trains students to reason logically and abstractly about computing, linking theory with hands-on practice. Students write software, build interactive websites, design systems, and work on new technologies.
Courses range from foundations of information technology and discrete mathematics to operating systems, cybersecurity, data science, and software engineering, with attention to how programming languages are organized. Majors also complete a mathematics or statistics requirement and a set of electives.
Research is available from the first year, and many students take internships across business, public, nonprofit, and university environments. A two-semester thesis is open to highly motivated students. The department is part of a national alliance supporting women in information technology. An accelerated combined pathway with library and information science and an online completion degree for adult learners are also offered.
