Overview

Smith's economics department has two majors: Economics, and Quantitative Economics, which carries a STEM designation. Students learn to analyze issues such as inflation, unemployment, health care costs and access, inequality, climate, development, growth and finance. Training covers statistical modelling, data analytics and experimental design. Students can join faculty-run research labs on campus and build practical experience, and a junior year abroad program includes choices taught in English and in other languages. Many majors aim for careers in areas such as finance, business, technology, consulting and legal practice, and others continue to graduate study. The department presents the subject as a way to build intuition about how economies work and to reason carefully about pressing social and political questions of the day.
