BA/BS in Classics and Classical Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics

Classical Studies at Smith examines the ancient Mediterranean, concentrating on Greece and Rome. The field is interdisciplinary, taking in language, literature, archaeology, art, history, thought and natural science from antiquity. Students read Greek and Latin texts in their original form and also take courses taught in English on subjects such as mythology, art and archaeology, and gender and sexuality. The department offers a Classical Studies major, a Classics major centred on language study, and a Greek major, along with an honors option for strong students. Because the discipline is broad, many students pair it with a second major. The Classical Studies route asks for several semesters of Greek or Latin alongside electives from fields such as archaeology, philosophy and religion, chosen with an adviser.
