AA/AS in Biology, General

This Associate of Science mixes the general education core with a biology emphasis. Students may follow a general biology track or a track suited to nursing and health professions. Biology leads to many fields, among them biotechnology, environmental science, forensic science, medicine, veterinary science and wildlife biology. Many of these demand study beyond the associate degree. Graduates are expected to use the scientific method, describe cell processes, genetics and evolution, understand tissues and organ systems and explain how organisms interact within ecosystems. The total is 60 credit hours. A sample of the science courses includes two biology sequences for majors, general chemistry and organic chemistry, with anatomy and physiology courses for the health professions track. Careers mentioned for the field include medicine, dentistry, pharmacology, marine science and toxicology.
