BA/BS in Applied Mathematics

This undergraduate major in the engineering and applied sciences college introduces students to the mathematical theories and techniques that analysts and researchers rely on in government, industry and the sciences. Coursework emphasizes problem solving, and students work with the campus computing facilities along the way. Students can lean toward actuarial work, statistics, operations research, management science or programmer-analyst roles. Typical courses cover probability theory, probability and statistics for the life sciences, financial mathematics and computational geometry. Admission is competitive. The department looks for excellent calculus and physics grades and a very strong showing on the math portion of the SAT or ACT. The department is led by a chair whose office is in the Math Tower.
