MA/MS in Applied Mathematics

This master's degree is housed in the same-named department, part of the engineering and applied sciences college. It trains graduate students broadly in computational and conceptual uses of mathematics, preparing them for work in government and industry. Students join research alongside national laboratories, industrial partners and science, biomedical and engineering groups. Faculty interests span graph theory, biostatistics, fluid dynamics, optimization, quantitative finance, risk management, stochastic modeling and many other areas, and the department draws substantial external funding. Full-time students can usually finish in three or four semesters. Those with prior graduate coursework may ask to transfer up to twelve credits, which could shorten completion to two semesters if approved. Applicants are strongly urged to build some facility in computer programming before enrolling.
