Cultural anthropology is the focus here, paired with practical skills taught by faculty who have done fieldwork themselves. Students learn to study social behavior by watching closely and by conducting interviews, supported by small classes, research projects, internships and time abroad.
Instructors have worked in the South Pacific, Asia and Latin America. Their interests include democratization, religion, language and education across cultures.
The department sponsors two overseas programs. One takes place in Palau and Fiji, where participants stay with local families and look at how schooling relates to culture and society. The other is in Jaipur, India, where students partner with community projects, schools and nonprofit groups while planning their own research. Students may pursue the subject as a major or a minor, or pair it with another field in an interdepartmental major.
