Program details

Overview

UMass Amherst's master of architecture was the earliest accredited architecture degree at a state-run university in the New England region. The program has three parts: core requirements, areas of exploration, and a closing master's thesis. The curriculum is interdisciplinary, bringing together faculty and students from studio art, art history, landscape architecture, building construction, environmental engineering, computing and management. Through a regional consortium, students may also take classes at four neighboring colleges in the Pioneer Valley. The thesis gives each student a chance to develop an individual design process while taking on projects that serve communities near and far, in line with the program's public mission. Applicants should review the program page for the current application date. Students who enjoy collaborative design work may find the interdisciplinary mix appealing.
