The music school, which also houses dance, offers undergraduate study in performance, composition, education, jazz, theory, history, ethnomusicology, technology and liberal arts approaches to music. Students learn from a large resident faculty who perform and publish research widely.
Two broad tracks are available. Those wanting conservatory-style training can pursue the bachelor of music, or a major with a concentration in history and literature, theory or technology. The bachelor of arts and bachelor of science with a general or popular music concentration suit students who want a wider liberal arts education, and the general concentration needs no audition or portfolio.
Students rehearse and teach in a building with many studios and practice rooms and perform in a mid-sized concert hall. The school presents hundreds of concerts and events annually, covering classical and early repertoire, jazz, world music and newly written work.
