Overview

The Economics Department at Vassar seeks to help students grasp the forces of the economy that influence global society and daily life. Students sharpen their reasoning, learn about important economic issues and gain insight into government policy and business behavior. The discipline is introduced as the study of how societies cope with scarcity. Microeconomics looks at decisions by households and firms, while macroeconomics considers how individual activities fit together. Introductory courses cover the basics, and a wide range of intermediate and advanced courses follow. The department is one of the largest on campus and has a lively majors committee. Students can take part in an exchange program with the Toulouse School of Economics. An economics background can open doors in fields like finance, law, politics, the media and world affairs.
