Overview
Åland University of Applied Sciences, known locally as Högskolan på Åland, is the higher education institution of the Åland Islands, based in Mariehamn.
Teaching takes place on two campuses, Högskolan Södra on Navigationsskolegränd and Högskolan Norra on Neptunigatan, and new students from every programme are enrolled together at the Alandica venue on Strandgatan. The programme range combines business, health and technology with maritime training.
Students can study business administration and nursing, each with a distance version, as well as marine technology and the master mariner programme. Engineering strands include energy, design and automation, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering.
Maritime students practise aboard the school vessel m/s Michael Sars and on sailing-ship placements, continuing a navigation teaching tradition on Åland that reaches back to the middle of the nineteenth century.
Several programmes offer a voluntary online refresher in upper-secondary mathematics before the first term. Applicants can apply with Swedish or foreign upper-secondary certificates, with translations required for other languages.
People who only want single courses can join regular programme classes without formal eligibility for higher education, for a course fee of 50 euros. The institution belongs to the EUNICoast university alliance and takes part in several Nordplus exchange networks.
