Founded 1958 as Qinghai Technology College.

Became Qinghai University 1960, following the merger with Qinghai Agriculture and Husbandry College, Qinghai College of Finance and Economics. The university closed down during the Cultural Revolution.

Reopened as Qinghai Agriculture College 1971, later as Qinghai University 1988. Incorporated Qinghai College of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine 1997.

Acquired present status 2004 following the merger with Qinghai Provincial Agricultural and Forestry Sciences College, Qinghai Provincial Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences College, Qinghai Vocational College of Finance and Economics 2001, Qinghai Medical College 2004.
