Founded 1902 by Zhang Jian as Yangzhou Normal School and Tonghai School of Agriculture.

The Agriculture Section and the Humanities Special Training Class moved to Yangzhou, giving rise to Subei Institute of Agriculture and Subei Normal Vocational School;other institutes were established in Yangzhou or moved to Yangzhou 1952. Merger of Teachers College of Yangzhou, Agricultural College of Jiangsu, Engineering College of Yangzhou, Medical College of Yangzhou, Water Conservancy Engineering College of Jiangsu and Business School of Jiangsu and gave rise to present university 1992.
