ESJ Lille, the Ecole Superieure de Journalisme de Lille, was founded in 1924 and is among the earliest professional journalism schools in Europe.

It was the first of the 14 journalism schools recognised by the French profession. The school is run as an independent, non-profit association and describes its mission as journalism built on facts and depth.

Its historic flagship is a generalist diploma at master level (bac +5) covering two years for about 75 students, ten of them international: a general first year followed by a specialised second year that can be completed as an apprenticeship. Alongside it the school offers two specialised professional licences at bac +3, one in sport journalism and one in local press, as well as a post-baccalaureate academy run with the University of Lille.

Distance programmes include a multimedia journalism licence, a master in media management with an international track, and a climate and media master.

The school also provides competition-entry preparation courses, continuing education, media-literacy activities and introductory summer courses for young people aged 11 to 20. More than 600 international students have graduated from the school, and the Erasmus+ label received in 2023 supports exchanges, including with Laval University in Quebec.
