Mauritius Institute of Health

The Mauritius Institute of Health (MIH) is a public parastatal body established in 1989 by an Act of Parliament as the training and research arm of Mauritius's Ministry of Health and Quality of Life.

It is based at Powder Mill, Pamplemousses, on the grounds of the SSR National Hospital, and is formally listed by the Higher Education Commission as one of the ten public higher-education institutions it regulates. MIH's core mandate is continuing professional development (CPD) for doctors, dental surgeons, nurses and other healthcare workers, delivered through structured training programmes, induction courses for new recruits, and an expanding slate of online courses.

Alongside training delivery, the institute carries out public-health research — covering areas such as non-communicable diseases, infectious diseases, and maternal and child health — and maintains a Documentation Centre together with the Virtual Health Library Mauritius, the health sector's first virtual library resource, launched in 2014. Because MIH's programmes are oriented chiefly toward upskilling already-qualified health professionals rather than first-entry undergraduate degrees, its fit within a general university directory is narrower than Mauritius's other public HEIs; it is included here on the strength of its own HEC-recognised public-HEI status, and the owner should confirm whether its CPD/training catalogue meets the site's certificate/diploma-level bar before publishing it alongside degree-granting institutions.
